The Sugar Act

The Sugar Act was created in 1733 and it originally levied 6 pence per gallon of molasses imported. This taxes were mostly avoided because the merchants smuggled the goods. On April 5, 1764 the tax was about to expire and the Parliament modified it. This modification is also known as The Revenue Act of 1764. It reduced the tax to only 3 pence per gallon but Lord Grenville sent instucted British officers to make sure this tax was paid.

Other goods such as sugar, certain wines, coffee, pimiento, cambric and printed calico were also taxed by this act. Tjis led to the decline in the rum industries of the colonies and this reduced the flow of money harming the economy.
